Welcome and updates – AI Policy, Scottish Government

  • SG are now piloting the new format of the AI taskforce for 6 months with the inclusion of thematic working groups.

  • The UK Government, along with several other countries including the US, signed a Council of Europe international treaty which aims to ensure that the use of AI systems is fully consistent with human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

  • The Scottish AI Alliance have recently launched a summary report exploring how children’s rights may be impacted by the increasing use of AI technologies.

  • CivTech recently launched two new wild card challenges aimed at utilising AI in solving these challenges including in education, and around business support.

  • The Scottish AI Register will enable transparency and to understand what work is underway in research, innovation, pilots and adoption.

Presentations

Google Gemini Project, Education Scotland

  • Glow is Scotland’s national digital learning platform provided by Scottish Government and managed by Education Scotland. It provides learners and educators across Scotland an environment that can support learning across the whole curriculum through our core services, Microsoft M365, Google Workspace for Education and WordPress blogs.

  • Currently there are National applications within the Glow platform that include elements of machine learning and AI, such as Microsoft Learning Accelerators and Adobe Express for Education that uses Adobe Firefly.

  • A pilot project is underway with 2 local authorities in the use of Google Gemini within Glow for teachers. 

  • Safeguarding and information security is paramount during this trial with Education Scotland and other key stakeholder overseeing this.

  • Guidance has been co-created with the local authorities and teachers will refer to this when utilising Google Gemini in Education.

  • The outcome of the pilot in December, will help inform a decision as to whether or not Google Gemini will be part of the Google offering in Glow.

  • Use cases and insights gathered during the pilot will be shared with the other guidance and reference materials.

Redbox, Incubator for AI, UK Government

  • With the mission to harness the opportunity of AI to improve lives, drive growth and deliver better public services, the incubator for AI sits within DSIT.

  • One of the projects the department has been working on is the Redbox, an AI service build by Government for Government.

  • This product is an open source LLM that will summarise content and general chat and is grounded in Government context.
