Interdisciplinary Director of Data and AI and a Professor of Machine Learning
Georgios Leontidis serves as the Interdisciplinary Director of Data and AI and a Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Aberdeen, and is a member of the university's management group.. He is a world-leading expert in machine learning and directs the Interdisciplinary Centre for Data and AI, which focuses on developing new fundamental Human-Centred AI technologies, particularly for climate, agri-food, energy, and healthcare. Georgios is co-leading several projects, funded by organisations such as EPSRC, NZTC, Data Lab, CENSIS, industry, and others, that support his group of over 15 PhD students and research fellows. His work was recently cited in the 2022 foresight report 'Thinking about the Future of Food Safety' published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Georgios is a co-organiser of the 2023 British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC), which is a flagship international conference, and a co-organiser of the 2023 Medical Image Understanding and Analysis (MIUA) conference. In 2021, he gave a TEDx talk titled ‘How Data & AI Can Help Our Sustainable Future’. He is a member of the EPSRC peer review college and a member of the UKRI talent panel college. In 2022, he participated as a panellist in the Scottish AI summit, where he debated the topic ‘Why does explainable AI remain a challenge?’
Before joining the University of Aberdeen, Georgios held academic positions at the University of Lincoln and worked as a senior data scientist for IBA Dosimetry GmbH in Germany. Georgios holds an honours degree in engineering, an MSc in informatics, and a PhD in computer science.
